How To Consign

2018 Consignment Policy update:
Drop & Run consignment may be dropped off anytime we are open.
Wait & Review consignment (20 item limit) will only be accepted Monday to Thursday. We no longer offer this option on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

** Please note:  We are currently accepting fall and winter clothing only (Aug 1-Dec 31, 2018).

If you shop at Great Things in Store, you know what we're all about!  We look for the best brands and the best styles.  You've probably got a closet full of items that you can turn into cash.  Consigning isn't difficult, but there are a few policies and procedures that you need to be aware of before beginning.

We sell items on consignment which means that you'll start earning 40% of the basic price as your items sell within the 60 day contract period.  Collect your money or apply your earnings as a store credit whenever you like.

Please join our email list to be notified of any exceptions.  We reserve the right to stop accepting items on any given day or week for season changes and when so many items have been brought in that it poses a safety hazard in the store.

All items must come in on hangers or folded neatly in boxes. We will not go through items brought in bags.  All items must be freshly washed, ironed, and free of pet hair, flaws such as stains, holes, fading or other signs of wear.  In other words, we're looking for items in perfect condition. Only current styles sell well, so we generally will only accept items that have been bought new within the past four years.

We take season-specific clothing, so make sure you know what season to bring in when.  We don't have a big market for snowsuits in June or shorts in September.  Generally, think about what you or your kids will be wearing two to three months from now, and that is what we are looking for.

You always have two options when bringing in your items.

  1. Drop and Run:  This option is available seven days a week, anytime we are open. You may bring up to four medium-sized boxes in per consignment day.  Any items that do not meet our guidelines or that we can't take for whatever reason are automatically donated to charity. *please note that any boxes containing a large percentage of clearly unsuitable items will be entirely donated*
  2. Wait and Review:  You may bring up to 20 items per consignment day, Monday to Thursday only.  We will do a quick, preliminary review of your items while you shop.  Items that we can't use will returned at that time.  Please understand that your items will be reviewed and priced by experienced staff anytime in the next seven days, and if there are items that don't pass the second review we do provide you the courtesy of a phone call so that you may pick them up within 2 days of the call.
    * This option is recommended for first-time consignors and anyone who is concerned about the possibility of much-loved items being donated.
Please understand that to consign at Great Things in Store, you MUST choose one of these two options each time you consign.  We don't make exceptions to the rules, such as allowing you to pick up items we don't accept on a Drop and Run, or reviewing more than 20 items.  Our system enables us to process consignment very quickly, which is what allows us to make you money!

Here are more specific guidelines about what we take:

Kids Items

  • We specialize in better brand names like Ivivva, Triple Flip, Justice, Gap, Gymboree, The Children's Place, Oshkosh, etc, purchased new within four years.
  • Lower end brands like George, Joe Fresh, Athletic Works, etc. will rarely be accepted.
  • All footwear must be clean and in flawless condition.
  • Baby equipment must meet Canadian Safety Standards and be clean, complete and in excellent condition.  Please include batteries if required.  Items older than 5 years are generally not accepted.
  • Examples of baby equipment that we do take: exersaucers, high chairs, play pens, bouncy chairs, jumperoos, bassinets, baby monitors
  • Examples of baby equipment we do not take: potties, cloth diapers, cribs, breast pumps, bath seats, change tables and other furniture
  • Because of the high incidence of recalls, we don't take small toys.  We do take kitchen centers, ride-on toys, playmats, bikes, tool benches, and other outdoor types of toys.

Maternity Items

  • We have a high demand for current styles in maternity clothing.
  • Items must look new with no signs of wear or fading.
  • Nursing clothing is in high demand, however we do not accept nursing bras.

Women's Clothing

  • Only IN-STYLE clothing sells! Make sure your items have been bought new within a few seasons.  Flare/wide leg pants are a good example of what might have been in-style a few seasons ago, but that are NOT selling now.
  • VERY IMPORTANT: We specialize in the young adult market, and take brands such as lululemon, Bench, Wilfred, Banana Republic, etc.  The majority of our shoppers are between 15-35, so we only take brands that appeal to this age group.
  • Mature women's brands such as Jones New York, Eddie Bauer, Liz Claiborne as well as business wear are generally not accepted. We just don't have the space to do everything.
  • Low end labels like Forever 21, Joe Fresh, Old Navy, Costa Blanca, , Seductions, etc. don't have a high market value and as such are generally not accepted.
  • We accept fashionable, high-quality footwear in flawless condition.
  • We do not accept items such as lingerie, swimsuits, dancewear, swimwear, hats or scarves.

Teen Girls and Boys

  • We take both teen girl and boy items.  Brands are important.  We will often take men's items in smaller sizes as long as they appeal to a younger market.  Think Ivivva, Triple Flip, Roxy, Quiksilver, Billabong, Abercrombie, American Eagle, etc.

Please keep in mind that we only accept items that we feel our customer base will purchase, at a high enough price to justify the large labour costs that a consignment store faces.  Please don't take it personally if some or all of your items are not a fit for our store.  It may not always make sense to you, but our decisions are based on research and experience, and it's never our intention to offend.  If you are still emotionally attached to your items, please hold on to them.
